Pre- Professional Training

The ISU Student Counseling Center accepts a cohort of 9-12 trainees from master’s and doctoral programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology and Mental Health Counseling programs each year. Pre-Professional Training accepts trainees from master’s level and bachelor’s level from Social Work Programs. Our recent trainees have been from the following programs:

• Indiana State University – Social Work BSW Program
• Indiana State University – Social Work MSW Program
• Indiana University-Clinical Psychology Program Ph.D. Program
• University of Indianapolis- Clinical Psychology Psy.D. Program
• University of Indianapolis- Clinical Psychology M.A. Program
• Eastern Illinois University- Clinical Psychology M.A. Program
• Purdue University- Counseling Psychology Ph.D. Program
• Saint Mary of the Woods College-Art Therapy M.A. Program

We are happy to review applications from graduate students in any mental health-related programs (i.e., psychology, counseling, social work) at ISU or any neighboring schools. 

What We Have to Offer

Trainees at the SCC receive one hour per week of individual supervision with a primary supervisor and one hour per week of group supervision with trainees from various training programs. The opportunity for a second hour of supervision per week with a secondary supervisor is available for first-time practicum trainees, master’s level interns, and those with interests in specialized areas. We also encourage consultation with our diverse staff of mental health professionals. Video-recordings are utilized as part of the supervision process in order to guide trainees in their learning. Didactic trainings on various topics relevant to working in a college counseling center are also provided throughout the year based on needs and requests of our trainees.

All of our trainees gain competencies in the following areas during their training year at the SCC:

• Develop individual counseling skills
• Co-facilitate psycho-educational groups on alcohol and marijuana use
• Give brief marketing presentations for the SCC
• Participate in other outreach activities, such as awareness week tabling and mental health screenings
• Interpret and utilize basic assessment instruments
• Become comfortable with use of a primary theoretical orientation in clinical work and in conceptualization of cases
• Present one client case per semester to supervisors and fellow trainees
• Develop strong documentation skills

Based on interest, skill level, and training, trainees may also opt to gain experience in the following areas:

• Develop skills in assessment, including ADHD/LD testing and personality testing
• Involvement in crisis situations as they arise
• Develop consultation skills while acting as a liaison to a specific student population or office on campus
• Specialize in treatment of specific student populations
• Facilitating a therapy or support group based on a specific topic
• Research and data collection
• Advanced trainees have the opportunity to act as a secondary supervisor to a master’s level trainee
• Other opportunities may be available as requested by the trainee

• Letter of interest explaining your previous clinical or semi-clinical experiences and what you hope to gain from completing a training experience at the SCC
• Current curriculum vita

At some point in the application process, we may require documentation from or contact with your academic program in order to verify your eligibility for participating in a clinical training experience.

Applications should be submitted in the spring semester for placement the following fall. Once an application is received, candidates will be contacted for an on-site interview with the SCC staff. Interviews typically take one hour.
